In the heart of Lisbon's Baixa district, on the historic Rua dos Sapateiros, lies a culinary institution that is as rich in history as it is in flavor: A Licorista O Bacalhoeiro . This celebrated restaurant offers a genuine taste of traditional Portuguese cuisine, with a special focus on the country's beloved codfish, or bacalhau . The name itself tells a story of two historic establishments that merged into one. "A Licorista" translates to "the liqueur maker," a nod to the space's origin in 1896 as a company producing liqueurs from national fruits. By the 1920s, the location, then known as "Companhia Portugueza de Licores," had become a favored spot for one of Portugal's most renowned literary figures, the poet Fernando Pessoa.
